ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State men's basketball team (6-11, 1-4 MEAC) will try to snap a five-game losing streak Monday when the Bulldogs play host to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe, North Carolina A&T (8-11, 2-3 MEAC), in an ESPNU nationally televised contest at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center, beginning at 9:05 p.m.
The televised match-up will be preceded by a battle between the SC State and NC A&T women at 6:30 p.m. as SC State celebrates “Greek Night.” Greek-letter members are encouraged to wear their colors and compete for prizes.
Coach Tim Carter's Bulldogs hope to snap a losing streak that reached five games Saturday with a 68-62 MEAC loss to visiting Norfolk State. SC State was victimized by 26 turnovers in the contest in which it blew an 11-point first-half lead and an eight-point cushion in the final stanza.
The loss marred an outstanding performance by Bulldog senior center Jason Johnson, who was a perfect 11 of 11 from the field and finished with a career-high 31 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Johnson is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 15.5 points and 7.6 boards, respectively. Junior Jason Flagler is second both categories with 13 points and 5.4 rebounds each outing.
The visiting Aggies, coming off a 73-60 triumph over Winston-Salem State, are led by Tavarus Alston – one of three NC A&T players in double figures -- with 11.1 points per game. Robert Johnson and Nicholas Wilson are each contributing 10.6 points per game for Coach Jerry Eaves' team.
The SC State women (4-12, 1-4 MEAC) snapped a six-game losing streak Saturday with an easy 81-62 victory over winless Norfolk State. Former manager-turned player Shontavius Wiley recorded a double-double with career highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Senior Marie Reid leads the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 15.7 points per game and is also contributing 5.9 rebounds each outing. Junior Sophilia Hipps is second in scoring, averaging 14.4 points, while senior Jenell Moore is the top rebound with 7.2 per game to go along with a 5.5 point average.
The visiting Lady Aggies, who are undefeated in the MEAC at 5-0 and 12-5 overall, will look to Amber Bland, who had a big game in Saturday's triumph over WSSU with 29 points and 12 rebounds.
